Our history: Quality and perfection, made in Stolberg

Over 160 years of MÄURER & WIRTZ history – a success story which we can look back on with pride.

Our company was founded in 1845 when Michael Mäurer and his stepson Andreas Wirtz decided to start manufacturing soaps in Stolberg near Aachen, Germany. Soon, their bars of soap, detergents for the textile industry and perfumed toilet soaps were in demand well beyond the Rhineland region and grew popular in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. As early as 1870, a San Francisco-based manufacturer made a shaving soap based on the Stolberg formulation.

Between 1889 and 1930, we grew from a craftsman's business to an industrial company. The „Dalli“name, which was registered in 1899, brought about the development of our first brand-name article; in 1937, the company name was officially altered to include „Dalli-Werke“.

In addition to soaps and detergents, by the 1930s we had begun producing more and more cosmetics and fragrances. The Tabac brand, for example, was created from a formulation in 1938 and has been sold as „Tabac Original“ since 1952.

In the 1960s, Dalli-Werke MÄURER & WIRTZ went multinational by taking over French companies. It has been consistently pursuing this approach since the 70s, resulting in a modern, international company.

MÄURER & WIRTZ has been an independent subsidiary of the Dalli-Group: since 1990 – a global player which has grown to cover some 140 markets. We are managed by the fifth generation of our family and are one of the leading names in the field of fragrances and body care.
